Data Collection and Usage
What Data We Collect
ChainGuard does NOT collect, transmit, or share any personal data. The Extension operates entirely locally within your browser with the following exceptions for security purposes only:
Security Database Updates
The Extension periodically downloads updated threat databases containing known phishing URLs and malicious smart contract addresses. This download:
- Contains only threat signature data, not user information
- Does not transmit any user browsing data
- Is performed over encrypted HTTPS connections
- Does not include any personally identifiable information
Data Stored Locally
The Extension uses Chrome's storage.local API to save the following data exclusively on your device:
- Protection settings: Your security preferences and alert configurations
- Whitelist: Websites you have manually marked as trusted
- Blocked sites history: A local log of blocked phishing attempts (optional)
- Threat database cache: Local copy of the threat signature database
- Extension preferences: UI settings and notification preferences
All of this data is stored locally on your device. None of your browsing activity, wallet addresses, or personal information is ever transmitted to any external server.
URL Checking Process
When you visit a website, ChainGuard performs the following security check:
- The URL is checked against the locally stored threat database
- Pattern matching is performed locally to detect suspicious URLs
- Smart contract addresses are verified against known scam addresses locally
- No URLs or browsing data are sent to external servers
Permissions
The Extension requests the following browser permissions:
| Permission | Purpose |
|---|---|
| storage | Save your security settings, whitelist, and threat database locally. |
| webNavigation | Monitor page navigation to check URLs against threat database before pages load. |
| tabs | Access current tab URL for real-time phishing protection. |

- Collect any personally identifiable information (PII)
- Track your browsing history or behavior
- Send your visited URLs to external servers
- Access or transmit your wallet addresses or private keys
- Use analytics, telemetry, or tracking tools
- Display advertisements

Data Retention
Since all data is stored locally on your device:
- Data persists until you clear your browser data or uninstall the Extension
- You can clear all Extension data at any time through Chrome's settings
- Uninstalling the Extension automatically removes all locally stored data
Security
All data stored by ChainGuard resides locally on your device within Chrome's secure storage sandbox. The threat database updates are downloaded over encrypted HTTPS connections. No user data is transmitted over the network, eliminating risks associated with data interception or unauthorized remote access.
Cryptocurrency and Wallet Safety
ChainGuard is designed with cryptocurrency security as a top priority:
- We NEVER access, request, or store your wallet private keys
- We NEVER interact with your cryptocurrency transactions
- We NEVER require wallet connection to function
- Our protection works entirely at the URL/website level
Children's Privacy
ChainGuard does not knowingly collect any data from children under the age of 13. Since the Extension does not collect any personal data from any user, it is compliant with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected by updating the "Last Updated" date at the top of this document. Continued use of the Extension after any modifications constitutes acceptance of the updated Privacy Policy.
